Big Wednesday (1978)
Set in the decade of the tumultuous 1960s, Big Wednesday tells the story of three young men whose passion in life is surfing. It traces their lives from the summer of their burgeoning friendship in 1962, to their mixed-results attempts to evade the Vietnam War draft in 1965, to the loss of one of their tribe in Vietnam in 1968. Written by Malibu maverick John Milius, the film is about the bonds of friendship and camaraderie, and surfing is the common thread.
Surfer, writer, and musician from Pacific Palisades, Denny Aaberg wrote a short story that served as the creative catalyst for Big Wednesday. It seemed a no-brainer for him to hook up with his long-time Malibu buddy Milius and the two combined their respective expertise to craft one of the finest time capsules of surfing culture on film.
