China Beach TV series
China Beach was a dramatic ABC television series that aired for four seasons, 1988 to 1991. Based on the book Home before Morning (1983), by former US Army Nurse Lynda Devanter, the show highlighted varied experiences of Army doctors, nurses, officers, soldiers, Red Cross volunteers, and civilians. China Beach was not timid about exposing viewers to the brutality of war, yet reflected a very human touch in the face of daily tragedy. Many of the characters and scenes revolved around the lifeguards and occasional surfers there at the beach. To their credit, the writers of the series consulted with Vietnam veterans, including China Beach Surf Club founder Larry Martin, to ensure accuracy and detail.
